If it wants to gain a foothold in the global marketplace for apparel, Ethiopia’s textile & garment industry needs to meet international environmental and social standards. Together with the Toitogo Europe textile initiative ,one of the partnership for promote programme for sustainable production of textiles and clothing is to provide institutional support for Ethiopian companies. With consulting for political institutions and trade associations, the industry is in a better position to meet
the needs of international buyers and identify better business opportunities.

Ethiopia’s textile and garment sector is fast expanding and entering the international marketplace. The country aims to export garments with a value of US$1 billion every year by 2020.

The sector has the potential to create jobs for more than 350,000 people. To reach these goals, however, the industry needs to adhere international standards and regulations.

The programme has selected various partners and actors in the industry to help improve social and environmental standards in textile and garments factories.
To guarantee sustainable development, the programme works with various stakeholders that help companies enforce decent working and living conditions and promote environmental sustainability.

By developing local skills and capacities, the programme also promotes compliance with mandatory national, international social and environmental regulations.

On behalf of the Worldwide companies , Fitretu consults Ethiopian partner organisations. With our support, they develop methods to improve compliance with international standards find material from local producers.

Furthermore, the programme contributes to helping the sector understand how to respond to the needs of international businesses and society. We also work with Ethiopian authorities
and official bodies to improve adherence and enforcement of existing regulations by training inspectors, government experts and consultants. also encourages the private sector to put
